Wedding Flower Trends 2014
As you plan all the details of your big day, don’t forget the wedding flowers! One of my favorite things about photographing weddings is seeing all the gorgeous floral arrangements. The bride’s bouquet, the bridal party’s bouquets and boutonnieres, the wedding arch and aisle florals, the cocktail hour mini centerpieces, and of course the pièce de résistance: the reception centerpiece arrangements. Whether your wedding is a lavish, formal affair, or an intimate, low key event, your personalities should shine through in the décor and details.
To help you plan your wedding flowers, here are the top 5 wedding flower trends 2014:
1) Pretty Peony The peony came out on top as flower of the year, and I’m thrilled. Although its scent is not what one would call sweet, what it lacks in fragrance, it more than makes up for in looks. The peony has a romantic feel and comes in a variety of colors and petal styles, lending itself to multiple venues, dress fabrics, and décor.
2) Crystal and Silver Vases For centerpieces, 2014 is the year of crystal and silver. Vessels and vases will be modern and elegant with full yet loose arrangements that are formal for the occasion but not too stuffy. Silver or crystal vases give a “retro” feel but keep it contemporary and fresh.
3) Pinks, Peaches, and Nudes The color trends this year are nude, light pinks, and romantic peaches. Think subtle, think subdued, and think the first amazing blossoms of spring. If your wedding colors are of the pastel variety, think about incorporating some roses, carnations, orchids, lilies or hydrangeas in your favorite pink/peach hue. If you’re going with these colors, go light on the lipstick, opting for a barely there coral or light pink lip, flowing curls and simple bridesmaid dresses that fit the color scheme.
4) Flowers in Your Hair Don’t go overboard like at Coachella or Bonnaroo, but a few simple flowers in the hair can add a beautiful touch. If the bride’s outfit is already planned, consider having your bridesmaids adding a small flower to their hair or up-do. Flowers in the hair are a huge trend for 2014 and when done right (ask your stylist!) they can look stunning in your wedding photographs. 5) Intricate Centerpieces Nothing makes a bigger impression at your reception than a centerpiece that makes your guests say, “Wow!” I have seen orchids, blooms and vines, suspended glass orbs, vintage bird cages, and maritime lanterns. No matter what your style is, show it off with centerpieces that are truly you and over the top. Some centerpieces can be very detailed while others can be delicate and simple. Put thought into your tables and choose flowers that complement your theme.
