With the arrival of March comes melting snow and springtime blooms. March 8th is International Women’s Day and in Moldova this holiday is combined with celebrating the arrival of spring. Flowers are given and received and women wear “Martisors”, pins with combinations of red and white with little trinkets like flowers attached.
The colors symbolize the melting of snow and arrival of the sun and blooms at springtime. This year, the holiday brought some childhood memories to mind. I remember my grandmother coming home with handfuls of delicate freesia flowers which would perfume the whole house. She would wear the Martisor pins, and I always delighted in the colorful and dainty trinkets.
